ESSAY COUNSELING

College Application Essays: The application essay is the most important qualitative component of admissions applications, with equal weighting with test scores and academic performance. We help students identify the best version of themselves and craft essays based on it.

Boarding School Essays: We also help students with their boarding school application essays. These are not as intense as college essay counseling and don’t take as much time. We’ll be focused more on helping students generate ideas for answering the questions creatively.

Parent Statements: Should parents need any editorial or developmental help with the parent statement essays, we’re here to help. We can help you find a compelling angle, incorporate telling anecdotes, edit, and proofread.

I got in and mom's crying and dad wants to cancel his meetings to have a celebratory lunch and we're all so happy! I literally cannot figure out the words to express how grateful I am for all of your help. I still can't figure it out so I'll go with a big, all-caps THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I honestly wouldn't have an essay (or any supplements) without you and I can't thank you enough for all of your support.

When I first started working on my common app essay, I quickly realized how difficult writing about myself was. I went in to TA with a pretty bad first draft. Tyler, thankfully, took me in under his wing and sat down with me, and slowly helped me transform my essay into the blooming onion (the best appetizer at Outback Steakhouse) of essays! Tyler showed me how to be passionate through my writing so colleges learned all they could about me without reading my entire life story!

Thinking introspectively can be extremely difficult, because we rarely take the time to do so. Neil and Tokyo Academics not only helped me to look at my own qualities and life, but helped me to gain confidence in my own identity. I truly believe this confidence in self is what was essential to my acceptance to my top choice university.

ADMISSIONS COUNSELING

Be it for schools in Japan or elsewhere, boarding school and college applications can be perplexing. With years of experience and a proven track record of getting students to where they want to be, TA is on hand to help you conquer this difficult process.

Building a College List: Which of the thousands of schools out there is right for you? How would you even know? Let us help you by providing the lastest information and insights garnered from long experience at the world’s leading institutions.

Developing and articulating an ‘x’ factor: What about you stands out? Why would a college or school want you? TA will help you determine which of your skills and activities carries the greatest value in applications, and will work with you to maximize their impact.

Writing a Resume: How long should your resume be? How do you highlight what you’ve done? What do you want to highlight?

Class Planning: What do colleges expect me to take? What classes will best position me in the application process? What should I be learning and taking away from each class? We can help you understand the overall strategy for class planning and how it fits into the applications process.

Test prep timeline: When should I be taking the SAT/ACT or the SSAT/ISEE? The SAT Subject Tests? The TOEFL? How am I supposed to plan for prepping and taking all of these tests? Tokyo Academics can help you restore order to your life and figure out the game plan.

[My son] got a great offer to study at Yale. [My husband] and I are so happy for him! Great achievement. All (or, at least, a great part) thanks to the good work he's done at Tokyo Academics. I will be eternally grateful.

This was an emotional morning, for sure, and [my child's acceptance to university] was particularly meaningful. Thank you for all your efforts on our behalf! I think she is only now touching on her true potential and all the possibilities and it is very exciting to watch. Your tutelage, mentorship and friendship has made all the difference and we hope this is a relationship that lasts well beyond [high school]!

Student, Seisen

Thank you so much for all your help during the college admission process . . . you were extremely helpful when I had 2 days to finish my applications and I was about to give up. I will always be grateful for how much you actually care for us and push us to become better versions of ourselves and try our best.

INTERVIEW TRAINING

Do you know how to answer the following questions?

-What are your greatest strengths? Weaknesses? What would your friends say about you?

-Why are you interested in our school? How does our school fit into your goals?

-What is the achievement of which you are most proud? Could you tell me about a time when you had to overcome a conflict with someone?

The Boarding School and College Admissions Interview is a hurdle for which most students have never had relevant practice and experience. The best preparation for these interviews is not to guess at what questions might be coming, but to understand yourself and your motivations as well as possible.

Tokyo Academics can support your student in:

-Understanding the point of the interview, and what admissions officers are looking for.

-Interrogating themselves to understand and articulate the ideas and experiences admissions interviewers will be probing for.

-Developing tools and practicing to ensure concise and effective delivery of content.
