Mando

University of California, Irvine
(Online & In-person)

Bio:

When Mando started college, they were more interested in playing soccer than in studying. However, they quickly fell in love with biochemistry and then got into nuclear chemistry through a U.S. Department of Energy summer study program at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York, which led them to finish undergraduate studies at to the University of California, Irvine, to learn the ins-and-outs of a research reactor while obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology. After undergrad, they chased their interest in nuclear science overseas and completed two research programs in Asia, one on global nuclear policy at the Korea Advanced Institute of Technology (KAIST), and one on radiation-induced DNA damage at the Institute of Science Tokyo (formerly Tokyo Institute of Technology) under the USA Fulbright Program. Two biomedical research papers and one nuclear policy recommendation paper later, Mando is now working toward a master’s degree in nuclear engineering while continuing their radiobiological research at the Institute of Science Tokyo.

Mando’s experiences as a Teaching Assistant in general chemistry and biomedical engineering undergraduate classes have made them a flexible tutor who is comfortable with one-on-one student-paced learning as well as the fast pacing of quarter-system classes. Their strengths include biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering, especially in research applications of these foundational sciences.

Outside of studies, Mando fills their spare time with art-related volunteer work, such as face-painting for children at local community events or organizing for-charity artist collaborations and artbooks. They recently joined a manga-drawing club and have been enjoying learning about Japanese culture and language through this activity.
