He began tutoring college applicants in 2014 and has since served as a mentor and counselor in various capacities such as a writing coach, test-prep tutor, undergraduate instructor, reader for a graduate literary journal, and lead grant writer for America’s largest member-supported poetry organization. As an author, a book of his poems has been translated and published internationally; over 60 of his pieces have appeared in literary journals and anthologies; and he has given over twenty readings and talks as a featured speaker. He holds a JLPT N2 certification.
As a College Admissions Consultant, Ryan works with students to identify and craft their “story,” strengthening their writing and critical thinking skills while honing their narrative. Before joining Tokyo Academics, he taught writing to undergraduate students at New York University and coached private students on college admissions in the highly competitive New York City market
Ryan has worked with students admitted to schools including NYU, UPenn, University of Toronto, Boston University, Middlebury, Vassar, and Northeastern. When he was applying to schools himself, he was offered admittance to Dartmouth, Middlebury, UW-Madison, Macalester College, among others. His scholarship and writing has garnered support from the U.S. Fulbright Commission, the U.S. Embassy in Riga, the University of Tokyo, and the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs.
