College Talks: How to write your ‘Golden Ticket’ essay

July 2, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm JST

As summer begins, many of our rising seniors have begun working with TA’s essay counselors on the rewarding yet arduous process of brainstorming, outlining, writing, and revising the application essays that will determine whether they gain admittance to their dream universities.

On average, our most successful students spend:

  • 20 lesson hours on the Common App essay.
  • 15 lesson hours collectively on the four essays required by the University of California application.
  • 15-18 lesson hours on the requisite essays for British or Japanese universities.
  • 6-12 lesson hours on school-specific supplements.

Each of these essays demand radically different approaches, and students who start writing later in the fall are often overwhelmed by the amount of time and effort required to do it well.

The College Admission team here at Tokyo Academics would like to present our next College Talks event: How to Write Your ‘Golden Ticket’ Essay

  • Time/Date: Sunday, July 2 at 6PM (JST)
  • Location: Tokyo Academics Nishi-Azabu Center 6F
    • This event will be in-person

  • Dr. Jason Cody Douglass is the Director of Admissions Consulting at Tokyo Academics.
    • Dr. Douglass (Yale B.A., M.A., Ph.D.) has taught essay writing to students at Yale and Sarah Lawrence College, and counseled applicants successfully admitted to top 20 US universities including Yale, Cornell, UC Berkeley, and Northwestern. As a student himself, he was offered admittance to Harvard, UPenn, and UCLA, and garnered grants from Japan Foundation, the Richard U. Light Fellowship, and Yale’s Fund for Lesbian and Gay Studies. In 2023, he was awarded the Marston Anderson Prize for Best Dissertation in East Asian Languages and Literatures.

  • Learn how to adopt writing strategies that result in a “golden ticket” essay.
  • Focusing primarily on the types of essays required by American universities, Dr. Douglass will speak about the significance of structure, imagery, tone, extended metaphor, and self-reflection.
