Dr. Tomoko, a native of Tokyo, Japan, spent a year as a high-school exchange student in Bixby, Oklahoma, USA, before being graduated from Ochanomizu University Senior High School, one of the leading national high schools in Japan. She returned stateside to earn a B.A. (summa) in Psychology at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, an Ed.M. in Human Development and Psychology at Harvard University, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, World Language Education, from the top-ranked School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After teaching as an Assistant Professor of Japanese at a small liberal arts college near Springfield, Illinois for several years, Dr. Kern joined Tokyo Academics as Head of Online Vocabulary. She resides with her husband, child, and stepchildren in Madison, Wisconsin.
