Roger’s academic career first began at Oxford Academy in Cypress, California, where he found himself pursuing active involvement both inside and outside of the classroom. From taking on 11 different AP courses to pursuing his passion for music in jazz band and symphony orchestra to fielding positions on three Varsity-level sports teams, he always found the motivation to not only challenge new things, but to follow through and put forth his best effort in pursuit of excellence. Roger graduated just shy of reaching valedictorian, with Oxford Academy also ranked number 2 nationally among all U.S. public high schools at the time.
Roger’s academic journey continued at Johns Hopkins University under the Environmental Engineering program. Here, he found his aptitude and love for science and engineering, leading to his involvement in Engineers without Borders. As part of the global team, he traveled to Ecuador and took part in the design, planning, and construction of a new daycare center for the small community of Santa Rosa de Ayora. While Roger’s participation may have been limited to just a single project in the form of a seemingly simple daycare center, the significance of lending a helping hand to provide better opportunities and build brighter futures for others left a lasting impression on him. After 4 years at Johns Hopkins University, Roger graduated with both a Bachelor and Master of Science in Engineering Degree while maintaining a 3.9 GPA throughout.
Prior to joining Tokyo Academics, Roger worked in the civil and transportation engineering sector for 3 years before deciding that it was time to move on. His departure was spurred in part by his desire to seek new challenges and to find new experiences similar to that of his time in Engineers without Borders — by becoming a positive influence on the betterment of others. At Tokyo Academics, Roger now finds himself mentoring and nurturing high school students with a STEM focus, in both subject mastery and standardized testing.
In his free time, Roger enjoys revisiting his passion for music in the form of a symphony orchestra based in Shizuoka, covering symphonic renditions of modern pop and anisong. On weekends, you can find him hiking the coastline of Shizuoka by day and rehearsing with his orchestral group by night.
