Michael graduated from Bowdoin College with degrees in neuroscience and Asian studies. He has over ten years of tutoring and mentoring experience in educational and professional settings in the U.S. and Japan.
In college, Michael received several Japanese language awards, including a grant from the Mellon Foundation and a curatorial research fellowship from the Bowdoin College Museum of Art. His research culminated in an exhibition showcasing postwar drawings exchanged between U.S. and Hiroshima schoolchildren and was featured in the New York Times. Michael has also demonstrated excellence in scientific research. As an undergraduate, he received grants from NIH and NASA to support his research on the molecular and physiological underpinnings of nervous system regeneration. After being selected by the U.S. State Department for a Fulbright Fellowship, he applied his knowledge and experiences to study the biological basis of trauma among atomic bomb survivors in Hiroshima, Japan.
Having experienced the transformative power of meaningful mentorship firsthand, Michael joined TA’s team in order to help students reach their full potential. As a teacher and mentor, he has demonstrated a passion for building strong connections with students through active listening and conversation. Michael is particularly eager to support students who are interested in liberal arts colleges or careers in S.T.E.M and medicine. Outside of work, he enjoys rock climbing, triathlon, camping, and reading.
