The COVID-19 pandemic has forced several US schools and institutions to decide to waive the requirement for candidates to the class of 2026 to submit scores from standardized tests. For the 2022–2023 admissions season, certain universities have opted to maintain their test-optional policies. Which institutions won’t require tests in 2022? Find out below!
You may be already aware of the fact that, in light of the global epidemic, a significant number of US universities have chosen to maintain the test-optional policy they put in place last year. Many institutions have made test results optional for at least one more year in order to alleviate the pressure on students who have little access to testing chances due to numerous exams being postponed and many students being unable to travel to open testing locations in 2020.
While some institutions have taken things a step further and announced that test scores will be optional after 2022 (whether that be for an additional 2-3 years or permanently), many of the most prestigious institutions in the country have firmly stated that they do not intend to adopt permanent test-optional policies.

Understandably, many students are uncertain about the testing criteria for the institutions they intend to apply to because schools are free to use COVID-19 however they see fit. For the upcoming application year, we’ve compiled a complete list of all US universities that have chosen to go test-optional in some way (and beyond).
Don’t panic if the colleges you want to attend still require test results in 2021–2022. Also, if you’re one of the people who won’t be able to provide test results, you’ll want to make sure that the remainder of your application makes your qualifications stand out even more.
Colleges that accept SAT or ACT results do not mandate them. Whether or not you submit your test results is entirely up to you. Feel free to brag about your SAT performance if you did well. If your score is below average, on the other hand, you can decide not to reveal it and focus on strengthening other aspects of your application.
NOTE: Only use this list as a general reference. Since test-optional regulations change frequently, we advise applicants to check with each institution before applying.
